Contact Your Representatives

Do you know your reps?

At the federal level, you are represented by two senators and one representative. Senators Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth represent Illinois in the U.S. Senate.

The United States is divided into 435 congressional districts, each with a population of about 710,000 individuals. Each district elects a representative to the House for a two-year term. Representatives are also called congressmen/congresswomen. Illinois has 18 congressional districts, and therefore 18 representatives.

At the state level, you are represented by one senator and one representative. Illinois has 59 state senate districts and 118 state house districts.

Other tools

Many new apps developed in the past several months provide easy ways to send faxes and messages, but also provide call scripts and information on the most current issues. A few of the best:

A basic script

Keep it personal and targeted to a single issue. For example:

My name is [name], and I live in [city, state]. I am concerned about access to health care. My daughter was born with a heart condition and may have a difficult time obtaining insurance if individuals with pre-existing conditions are not protected. Also, she has had two surgeries and could hit a lifetime cap before she is 18. Please vote against repealing the ACA without immediate replacement that protects people like her. Thank you.

OR

My name is [name], and I live in [city, state]. I would like to ask [congressperson x] to vote [yes/no] on [insert bill here].
